The Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 10דברים 10

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

New tablets replace the shattered ones and are deposited in an acacia-wood ark; a parenthetical itinerary records Aaron's death, Eleazar's succession, and Levi set apart — 'YHWH is his inheritance.' Then the chapter's summit: what does YHWH ask but to fear, love, and serve him wholeheartedly, to circumcise the heart, and to love the sojourner as God does — he who owns the very heavens yet once set his love on the fathers.

Translation & textual notes

Deuteronomy 10 is textually stable in the Masoretic tradition, though it repays attention to several small cruxes. The feminine demonstrative הַהִוא (vv.1, 8) preserves the Pentateuch's archaic orthographic convention of spelling the third-feminine-singular pronoun with the consonants of the masculine הוּא while vocalizing it as הִיא, a feature largely confined to the Torah. The itinerary aside in vv.6-9 is widely regarded as a self-contained fragment: its third-person travel notices (Aaron's death at Moserah, Eleazar's succession, Levi's separation) interrupt Moses' first-person narrative of vv.1-5 and 10-11, and the placement of Aaron's death early in the itinerary from Kadesh sits awkwardly against Numbers 20:22-29 and 33:30-38, which locate it near Mount Hor at the end of the wilderness period — a geographical and chronological tension the MT's wording does not resolve. Verse 17's twin titles for divine sovereignty are pointed distinctly by the Masoretes: אֲדֹנֵי (construct, 'Lord of') carries the sacral vocalization proper to the divine title, while the following הָאֲדֹנִים ('the lords') is pointed as an ordinary human plural — a vocalization choice that visually distinguishes 'the Lord' from the 'lords' he surpasses. The Samaritan Pentateuch and LXX track the MT closely through the chapter, with only minor orthographic variation in the wilderness station names of vv.6-7. Versification follows the MT.
