The First Book of Chronicles, Chapter 23דברי הימים א 23

וְדָוִ֥יד זָקֵ֖ן וְשָׂבַ֣ע יָמִ֑ים וַיַּמְלֵ֛ךְ אֶת שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה בְנ֖וֹ עַל יִשְׂרָאֵֽל

So when David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel.

וַיֶּאֱסֹף֙ אֶת כָּל שָׂרֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים וְהַלְוִיִּֽם

And he gathered together all the princes of Israel, with the priests and the Levites.

וַיִּסָּֽפְרוּ֙ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם מִבֶּ֛ן שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וָמָ֑עְלָה וַיְהִ֨י מִסְפָּרָ֤ם לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָם֙ לִגְבָרִ֔ים שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים וּשְׁמוֹנָ֖ה אָֽלֶף

Now the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty and eight thousand.

מֵאֵ֗לֶּה לְנַצֵּ֨חַ֙ עַל מְלֶ֣אכֶת בֵּית יְהוָ֔ה עֶשְׂרִ֥ים וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה אָ֑לֶף וְשֹׁטְרִ֥ים וְשֹׁפְטִ֖ים שֵׁ֥שֶׁת אֲלָפִֽים

Of which, twenty and four thousand to set forward the work of the house of YHWH; and six thousand officers and judges:

וְאַרְבַּ֥עַת אֲלָפִ֖ים שֹׁעֲרִ֑ים וְאַרְבַּ֤עַת אֲלָפִים֙ מְהַֽלְלִ֣ים לַיהוָ֔ה בַּכֵּלִ֕ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתִי לְהַלֵּֽל

Moreover four thousand porters; and four thousand praised YHWH with the instruments which I made, , to praise .

וַיֶּֽחָלְקֵ֥ם דָּוִ֖יד מַחְלְק֑וֹת לִבְנֵ֣י לֵוִ֔י לְגֵרְשׁ֖וֹן קְהָ֥ת וּמְרָרִֽי

And David divided them into courses among the sons of Levi, , Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

לַגֵּרְשֻׁנִּ֖י לַעְדָּ֥ן וְשִׁמְעִֽי

Of the Gershonites , Laadan, and Shimei.

בְּנֵ֣י לַעְדָּ֗ן הָרֹ֧אשׁ יְחִיאֵ֛ל וְזֵתָ֥ם וְיוֹאֵ֖ל שְׁלֹשָֽׁה

The sons of Laadan; the chief Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel, three.

בְּנֵ֣י שִׁמְעִ֗י שלמות שְׁלוֹמִ֧ית וַחֲזִיאֵ֛ל וְהָרָ֖ן שְׁלֹשָׁ֑ה אֵ֛לֶּה רָאשֵׁ֥י הָאָב֖וֹת לְלַעְדָּֽן

The sons of Shimei; Shelomith, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These the chief of the fathers of Laadan.

וּבְנֵ֣י שִׁמְעִ֔י יַ֣חַת זִינָ֔א וִיע֖וּשׁ וּבְרִיעָ֑ה אֵ֥לֶּה בְנֵי שִׁמְעִ֖י אַרְבָּעָֽה

And the sons of Shimei , Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. These four the sons of Shimei.

וַֽיְהִי יַ֣חַת הָרֹ֔אשׁ וְזִיזָ֖ה הַשֵּׁנִ֑י וִיע֤וּשׁ וּבְרִיעָה֙ לֹֽא הִרְבּ֣וּ בָנִ֔ים וַיִּֽהְיוּ֙ לְבֵ֣ית אָ֔ב לִפְקֻדָּ֖ה אֶחָֽת

And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons; therefore they were in one reckoning, according to father's house.

בְּנֵ֣י קְהָ֗ת עַמְרָ֥ם יִצְהָ֛ר חֶבְר֥וֹן וְעֻזִּיאֵ֖ל אַרְבָּעָֽה

The sons of Kohath; Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four.

בְּנֵ֥י עַמְרָ֖ם אַהֲרֹ֣ן וּמֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיִּבָּדֵ֣ל אַהֲרֹ֡ן לְֽהַקְדִּישׁוֹ֩ קֹ֨דֶשׁ קָֽדָשִׁ֤ים הֽוּא וּבָנָיו֙ עַד עוֹלָ֔ם לְהַקְטִיר֩ לִפְנֵ֨י יְהוָ֧ה לְשָׁרְת֛וֹ וּלְבָרֵ֥ךְ בִּשְׁמ֖וֹ עַד עוֹלָֽם

The sons of Amram; Aaron and Moses: and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons for ever, to burn incense before YHWH, to minister to him, and to bless in his name for ever.

וּמֹשֶׁ֖ה אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים בָּנָ֕יו יִקָּרְא֖וּ עַל שֵׁ֥בֶט הַלֵּוִֽי

Now Moses the man of God, his sons were named of the tribe of Levi.

בְּנֵ֣י מֹשֶׁ֔ה גֵּרְשֹׁ֖ם וֶאֱלִיעֶֽזֶר

The sons of Moses , Gershom, and Eliezer.

בְּנֵ֥י גֵרְשׁ֖וֹם שְׁבוּאֵ֥ל הָרֹֽאשׁ

Of the sons of Gershom, Shebuel the chief.

וַיִּֽהְי֥וּ בְנֵי אֱלִיעֶ֖זֶר רְחַבְיָ֣ה הָרֹ֑אשׁ וְלֹא הָיָ֤ה לֶאֱלִיעֶ֨זֶר֙ בָּנִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים וּבְנֵ֥י רְחַבְיָ֖ה רָב֥וּ לְמָֽעְלָה

And the sons of Eliezer , Rehabiah the chief. And Eliezer had none other sons; but the sons of Rehabiah were very many.

בְּנֵ֥י יִצְהָ֖ר שְׁלֹמִ֥ית הָרֹֽאשׁ

Of the sons of Izhar; Shelomith the chief.

בְּנֵ֖י חֶבְר֑וֹן יְרִיָּ֤הוּ הָרֹאשׁ֙ אֲמַרְיָ֣ה הַשֵּׁנִ֔י יַחֲזִיאֵל֙ הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י וִֽיקַמְעָ֖ם הָרְבִיעִֽי

Of the sons of Hebron; Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

בְּנֵ֖י עֻזִּיאֵ֑ל מִיכָ֣ה הָרֹ֔אשׁ וְיִשִּׁיָּ֖ה הַשֵּׁנִֽי

Of the sons of Uzziel; Michah the first, and Jesiah the second.

בְּנֵ֤י מְרָרִי֙ מַחְלִ֣י וּמוּשִׁ֔י בְּנֵ֥י מַחְלִ֖י אֶלְעָזָ֥ר וְקִֽישׁ

The sons of Merari; Mahli, and Mushi. The sons of Mahli; Eleazar, and Kish.

וַיָּ֨מָת֙ אֶלְעָזָ֔ר וְלֹא הָ֥יוּ ל֛וֹ בָּנִ֖ים כִּ֣י אִם בָּנ֑וֹת וַיִּשָּׂא֥וּם בְּנֵי קִ֖ישׁ אֲחֵיהֶֽם

And Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters: and their brethren the sons of Kish took them.

בְּנֵ֣י מוּשִׁ֗י מַחְלִ֥י וְעֵ֛דֶר וִירֵמ֖וֹת שְׁלֹשָֽׁה

The sons of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three.

אֵ֣לֶּה בְנֵֽי לֵוִי֩ לְבֵ֨ית אֲבֹתֵיהֶ֜ם רָאשֵׁ֧י הָאָב֣וֹת לִפְקוּדֵיהֶ֗ם בְּמִסְפַּ֤ר שֵׁמוֹת֙ לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָ֔ם עֹשֵׂה֙ הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה לַעֲבֹדַ֖ת בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה מִבֶּ֛ן עֶשְׂרִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וָמָֽעְלָה

These the sons of Levi after the house of their fathers; the chief of the fathers, as they were counted by number of names by their polls, that did the work for the service of the house of YHWH, from the age of twenty years and upward.

כִּ֚י אָמַ֣ר דָּוִ֔יד הֵנִ֛יחַ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽי יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְעַמּ֑וֹ וַיִּשְׁכֹּ֥ן בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם עַד לְעוֹלָֽם

For David said, YHWH God of Israel has given rest to his people, that they may dwell in Jerusalem for ever:

וְגַ֖ם לַלְוִיִּ֑ם אֵין לָשֵׂ֧את אֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּ֛ן וְאֶת כָּל כֵּלָ֖יו לַעֲבֹדָתֽוֹ

And also to the Levites; they shall no carry the tabernacle, nor any vessels of it for the service thereof.

כִּ֣י בְדִבְרֵ֤י דָוִיד֙ הָאַ֣חֲרֹנִ֔ים הֵ֖מָּה מִסְפַּ֣ר בְּנֵי לֵוִ֑י מִבֶּ֛ן עֶשְׂרִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וּלְמָֽעְלָה

For by the last words of David the Levites numbered from twenty years old and above:

כִּ֣י מַעֲמָדָ֞ם לְיַד בְּנֵ֣י אַהֲרֹ֗ן לַעֲבֹדַת֙ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה עַל הַחֲצֵרוֹת֙ וְעַל הַלְּשָׁכ֔וֹת וְעַֽל טָהֳרַ֖ת לְכָל קֹ֑דֶשׁ וּמַֽעֲשֵׂ֔ה עֲבֹדַ֖ת בֵּ֥ית הָאֱלֹהִֽים

Because their office to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of YHWH, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God;

וּלְלֶ֨חֶם הַֽמַּעֲרֶ֜כֶת וּלְסֹ֤לֶת לְמִנְחָה֙ וְלִרְקִיקֵ֣י הַמַּצּ֔וֹת וְלַֽמַּחֲבַ֖ת וְלַמֻּרְבָּ֑כֶת וּלְכָל מְשׂוּרָ֖ה וּמִדָּֽה

Both for the shewbread, and for the fine flour for meat offering, and for the unleavened cakes, and for the pan, and for that which is fried, and for all manner of measure and size;

וְלַעֲמֹד֙ בַּבֹּ֣קֶר בַּבֹּ֔קֶר לְהֹד֥וֹת וּלְהַלֵּ֖ל לַיהוָ֑ה וְכֵ֖ן לָעָֽרֶב

And to stand every morning to thank and praise YHWH, and likewise at even;

וּלְכֹ֨ל הַעֲל֤וֹת עֹלוֹת֙ לַיהוָ֔ה לַשַּׁבָּת֔וֹת לֶחֳדָשִׁ֖ים וְלַמֹּעֲדִ֑ים בְּמִסְפָּ֨ר כְּמִשְׁפָּ֧ט עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם תָּמִ֖יד לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה

And to offer all burnt sacrifices to YHWH in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded to them, continually before YHWH:

וְשָׁמְר֞וּ אֶת מִשְׁמֶ֣רֶת אֹֽהֶל מוֹעֵ֗ד וְאֵת֙ מִשְׁמֶ֣רֶת הַקֹּ֔דֶשׁ וּמִשְׁמֶ֕רֶת בְּנֵ֥י אַהֲרֹ֖ן אֲחֵיהֶ֑ם לַעֲבֹדַ֖ת בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה

And that they should keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the holy , and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, in the service of the house of YHWH.
