The Book of Numbers, Chapter 6במדבר 6

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Two acts of consecration frame the chapter: the Nazirite's vow of separation to YHWH — abstaining from the vine, leaving the hair uncut, shunning every corpse — with the rite that closes it; and the Aaronic blessing by which the priests put YHWH's name upon Israel: 'May YHWH bless you and keep you… and give you peace.'

Translation & textual notes

Numbers 6 is textually stable in the MT, and vv. 24-26 preserve the oldest verifiably attested text of the Hebrew Bible: two silver amulets from Ketef Hinnom, Jerusalem (late 7th-early 6th c. BCE), inscribe an abbreviated priestly blessing, centuries earlier than the Dead Sea Scrolls - confirming that this liturgical unit circulated independently of its narrative frame very early. The chapter turns on a wordplay English cannot preserve: נָזִיר 'one separated, consecrated' and נֵזֶר 'consecration, crown, uncut hair' share the root נזר 'to separate, dedicate', so the nazirite's uncut hair (vv. 5, 7, 9, 18-19) is repeatedly called his נֵזֶר, his 'crown' - the word used also of the high priest's golden plate (Exod 29:6) and of royal diadems. The threefold prohibition (wine/grape products, hair, corpse contact) and the remedy for accidental defilement (vv. 9-12) parallel priestly holiness rules without formally making the nazirite a priest - 'holy to YHWH' (v. 8) here describes a layperson, man or woman alike (v. 2). The LXX (μεγάλην εὐχήν, 'a great vow') follows the MT closely, with minor pluses in vv. 13-20; 4QNumb shows no substantive divergence. The blessing (vv. 24-26) is a rising tricolon of 3-5-7 Hebrew words, each built on a jussive with YHWH as subject, sealed by v. 27's climactic וְשָׂמוּ אֶת שְׁמִי - the priests' spoken words literally 'place' YHWH's own name upon Israel.

The razor prohibition (תַּעַר לֹא יַעֲבֹר עַל רֹאשׁוֹ) frames the verse; between its statement and its rationale-clause (עַד מְלֹאת הַיָּמִם) stands the verse's theological center, קָדֹשׁ יִהְיֶה — the nazirite's ordinary body becomes, for the vow's duration, a holy thing, visibly marked by the wild-growing hair.

Verse 7 intensifies v. 6 by naming the four nearest kin — father, mother, brother, sister — for whom even ordinary priests may defile themselves (Lev 21:2-3); the nazirite may not. The causal clause כִּי נֵזֶר אֱלֹהָיו עַל רֹאשׁוֹ supplies the rationale that becomes the chapter's refrain: the visible, physical נֵזֶר on the head is the reason for every restriction.

New casuistic contingency: sudden defilementוְ
A second casuistic protasis (וְכִי, echoing v. 2's כִּי) introduces the chapter's central complication: accidental, sudden death nearby defiles the נֵזֶר despite the nazirite's innocence. Theological rationale: the priests place the name, YHWH blessesוְ
The chapter's closing statement distinguishes the priestly act (placing YHWH's name on Israel through the spoken formula) from the divine act (YHWH himself performing the blessing) — the fronted, emphatic וַאֲנִי אֲבָרֲכֵם makes clear that the priestly words are efficacious only because God himself stands behind them, closing both the blessing unit and the chapter as a whole.
