The Book of Numbers, Chapter 4במדבר 4

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The working-age Levites, thirty to fifty, are numbered for their service at the tent: the Kohathites carry the most holy things — but only after Aaron and his sons have wrapped them, for the bearers must not touch or look on the holy things and live; the Gershonites carry the hangings and the Merarites the framework, each clan's burden and total set out in turn.

Translation & textual notes

Numbers 4 is textually stable in the MT; its two most discussed features are lexical and theological rather than text-critical. The recurring כְּסוּי עוֹר תַּחַשׁ, 'covering of taḥash-skin' (vv. 6, 8, 10-12, 14, 25), names the outer layer protecting the ark, table, lampstand, altars, and vessels during transport, but תַּחַשׁ (H8476) has resisted certain identification since antiquity: the LXX renders it ὑακίνθινα, treating it as a color ('blue/violet') rather than an animal, while later interpreters have proposed dolphin or dugong hide (a marine mammal reached via Red Sea trade, hence 'taḥash-skin' here), badger or seal skin (the KJV/RSV tradition), or a mythical creature; no certain identification is possible from the Hebrew alone. Theologically, the chapter's center of gravity is the Kohathite death-warning: because the Kohathites carry the most holy objects yet may never touch or glimpse them uncovered (vv. 15, 20), Aaron and his sons must first fully wrap every item (vv. 5-14) before the Kohathites approach — mediated priestly handling converts a lethal exposure to holiness into a survivable transport task, reinforced by the added safeguard-speech of vv. 17-20 assigning each man his specific burden. The chapter's arithmetic is self-consistent: the clan subtotals of vv. 36, 40, 44 — 2,750, 2,630, and 3,200 — sum exactly to the grand total of 8,580 in v. 48. Versification follows the MT.

The bronze altar's full toolkit — firepans, forks, shovels, basins — is listed and covered together in one taḥash-skin layer without an intervening blue cloth, unlike the golden furniture; the sequence closes, as with every other poleable item, by reinserting the carrying poles.

And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy things and all the vessels of the holy place, at the breaking of camp, then after that the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them; but they shall not touch the holy things, lest they die. These are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting.

Climactic summary: the Kohathites' carrying-charge under the death-penaltyוְ
This verse is the theological hinge of the whole covering-procedure: only after Aaron and his priestly sons have completely wrapped every holy object may the Levitical Kohathites even approach, and even then they may carry but never touch or gaze upon the holy things themselves, on pain of death (וָמֵתוּ). Named explicitly as מַשָּׂא בְנֵי קְהָת, 'the burden of the sons of Kohath', this is the solemn warning the chapter's remaining verses (18-20) will reiterate and intensify — priestly mediation is not a courtesy but a lethal safeguard.

And the charge of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest is the oil for the light, and the incense of spices, and the regular grain offering, and the anointing oil — the oversight of the whole tabernacle and of all that is in it, of the sanctuary and its vessels.

Contrast: Eleazar's administrative charge distinguished from the Kohathites' carrying-burdenוְ
The verse pivots sharply from the death-threatened carrying-duty of v. 15 to a wholly different kind of responsibility: Eleazar, the priest, holds custodial oversight (פְקֻדַּת) of consumables and of the tabernacle's total inventory. An urgent negative command (אַל + jussive) closes the preceding Kohath instructions: mishandling the most holy objects could trigger the very extinction the verb תַּכְרִיתוּ evokes — the language of karet — so vv.19-20 immediately supply the remedy that averts that catastrophe.

At the command of YHWH they were numbered, by the hand of Moses, each and every man according to his service and according to his burden; and his numbered ones were those whom YHWH commanded Moses.

The chapter's final verse fronts עַל פִּי יְהוָה before the verb for emphasis, and adds אִישׁ אִישׁ, 'each and every man' — stressing that behind the aggregate number of v. 48 lies a personal assignment for every individual, closing the chapter on the same note of divine command and Mosaic mediation that framed vv. 37, 41, 45.
