The Book of Numbers, Chapter 18במדבר 18

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Numbers 18 answers Israel's terror after Korah: YHWH addresses Aaron directly — his only sustained direct speech to Aaron in the Pentateuch. Aaron and his sons bear the sanctuary's iniquity; the Levites, joined (לוה) to them, guard the tent but may not touch the holy things. Priesthood is a gift of service, funded by holy dues under an eternal covenant of salt — YHWH, not land, is Aaron's portion and inheritance; the Levites in turn tithe their tithe to the priests.

Translation & textual notes

Numbers 18 is transmitted with unusual stability across the MT witnesses; the Samaritan Pentateuch and 4QNumb show only minor orthographic variants (plene/defective spelling of מַתָּנָה, עֲבֹדָה) with no substantive divergence in wording, verse count, or order. The LXX renders the chapter closely, though it periphrastically expands מִשְׁמֶרֶת ('charge, guard-duty') with the φυλακή/φυλάσσω word-group and smooths some of the terse legal idiom — e.g. v. 7's מוּת יוּמָת ('shall surely be put to death') is rendered as a plain future passive. מִשְׁמֶרֶת itself is the chapter's structural keyword, recurring eight times (vv. 3, 4, 5, 8) to frame the whole unit as a matter of 'guarding a charge', a technical cultic term the versions struggle to render uniformly. בְּרִית מֶלַח עוֹלָם, 'a covenant of salt forever' (v. 19), is a crux of ancient Near Eastern comparison — salt's incorruptibility symbolizing perpetuity — echoed elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible only at 2 Chron 13:5; some LXX manuscripts add a small explanatory gloss. The chapter's address shifts fluidly between second-person singular (Aaron alone) and forms that include his sons/house, a distinction MT's verbal and pronominal-suffix morphology preserves precisely and that translation must take care not to flatten. Versification follows the MT throughout; no verse divisions differ from LXX or Vulgate numbering.

And YHWH said to Aaron, "You and your sons and your father's house with you shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary; and you and your sons with you shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood."

New unit: divine speech opening (direct address to Aaron)וַ
Wayyiqtol וַיֹּאמֶר opens a fresh speech unit, unusual in addressing Aaron directly rather than Moses (contrast v.25's frame, 'YHWH spoke to Moses'). The speech answers the people's terrified cry at 17:27-28 by assigning liability precisely: not the people, but Aaron and his father's house, bear the sanctuary's guilt.

And YHWH said to Aaron: "You shall have no inheritance in their land, nor shall you have any portion among them; I am your portion and your inheritance among the people of Israel."

A fresh introduction (וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל אַהֲרֹן) opens the theological climax of the chapter: the negation of landed inheritance (חֵלֶק/נַחֲלָה) is answered by YHWH's self-gift, 'I am your portion' — terminology later applied to the Levites (vv.23-24) and echoed in the Psalms (16:5; 73:26).

This verse supplies the rationale implicit throughout: the Levites' guard-duty (vv.2-4) exists precisely so that ordinary Israelites no longer risk the fatal encroachment that provoked ch.17's wrath (v.5); the infinitive pair לָשֵׂאת חֵטְא / לָמוּת traces the causal chain from guilt to death.
