The Book of Numbers, Chapter 13במדבר 13

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Twelve scouts vanish into Canaan and return divided: milk, honey, and a grape cluster too heavy for one man prove the promise true, yet fortified cities and the towering Anakim break the nation's nerve. Only Caleb and the newly renamed Joshua urge the ascent; the rest spread dread, and Israel measures itself — wrongly — as grasshoppers.

Translation & textual notes

Numbers 13 is textually stable in the MT, but several features invite comment. The roster of scouts (vv. 4-15) largely disappears from later biblical memory — only Caleb (v. 6) and Hoshea/Joshua (v. 8, renamed v. 16) recur — and its tribal order departs from the census lists of chs. 1-2, a variation the versions preserve without harmonizing. Deuteronomy 1:22-23 retells the mission with real differences: there the initiative is the people's, not YHWH's, and the spies are simply 'twelve men, one per tribe,' unnamed — a divergence long debated as complementary perspective or separate tradition. The chapter's greatest crux is v. 33's identification of the Anakim as נְפִלִים, 'Nephilim,' the same rare term used elsewhere only at Genesis 6:4 for antediluvian giants born of the 'sons of God' — a lineage the flood should have ended; interpreters have long wrestled with whether this reflects a genuine remnant tradition, a loose mythic type-name for any formidable giant, or the scouts' own hyperbole, flagged by the narrator's framing 'in our own eyes.' The Hoshea-to-Joshua renaming (v. 16) is proleptic, since the name יְהוֹשֻׁעַ has already been used of him at Exodus 17 and 24; some read the note as a later gloss clarifying an already-familiar figure. Versification follows the MT.

Gives the mission's outer geographic scope — Zin in the far south to Lebo-hamath in the far north — before vv. 22-24 narrate the actual, more limited route through the Negev to Hebron and the Valley of Eshcol; the tension between this idealized full-length survey and the concrete itinerary that follows has long been noted.

And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are from the Nephilim), and we were like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and so we were in their eyes.

Climactic claim + psychological verdict (report's conclusion)asyndeton
The report's climax and the chapter's most debated crux: the Anakim are identified with the antediluvian Nephilim of Gen 6:4 (theologically puzzling, since the flood should have ended that line), and the famous grasshopper simile exposes the report as subjective self-perception ('in our own eyes') rather than objective fact — fear, not faith, has the last word, setting up the people's rebellion in ch. 14.
