The Book of Leviticus, Chapter 20ויקרא 20

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The penal counterpart to chapter 18: Molech-worship and necromancy draw death or divine excision, cursing a parent is capital, and the incest and adultery catalogue of the prior chapter is answered case by case with graded sanctions, all grounded in Israel's call to be holy because YHWH who separated them is holy.

Translation & textual notes

Leviticus 20 is the penalty-code counterpart to the prohibition-list of ch. 18: the same acts recur, now fitted with sanctions, and the MT is textually stable across the chapter. It opens with child-sacrifice to Molech (vv. 1-5), sanctioned by the double formula מוֹת יוּמָת ('he shall surely be put to death', by communal stoning) and YHWH's own first-person threat, 'I will set my face against that man' — a formula repeated for those who shield the offender (v. 5) and for necromancy (v. 6). Mediums and necromancers (אֹבוֹת וְיִדְּעֹנִים) bracket the chapter: the client who consults them incurs divine כָּרֵת (v. 6), while the practitioner is executed by the community (v. 27) — the same offense, two distinct penalty registers. Cursing father or mother (v. 9) and the incest, adultery, and bestiality catalog of vv. 10-21 answer ch. 18 case for case, but the sanctions vary meaningfully: מוֹת יוּמָת with דְּמֵיהֶם בָּם ('their blood is upon them', vv. 9, 11-13, 16, 27) marks capital cases where the community executes and bears no bloodguilt; the Niphal וְנִכְרְתוּ / כָּרֵת formula (vv. 17-18) marks offenses left to divine excision rather than human execution; and 'they shall die/be childless' (עֲרִירִים, vv. 20-21) marks a third, milder sanction for the aunt- and sister-in-law-incest cases. תֶּבֶל (v. 12, 'perversion') and חֶסֶד (v. 17) are notable: the latter's ordinary sense 'kindness, loyalty' is inverted here to 'disgrace, shame', a crux debated since antiquity. The chapter closes with holiness parenesis — separating clean from unclean animals as Israel's own separation from the nations enacts — culminating in וִהְיִיתֶם לִי קְדֹשִׁים כִּי קָדוֹשׁ אֲנִי יְהוָה (v. 26), the theological ground of the entire penal code. Versification follows the MT.

Divine sanction added to the human penaltyוַ
YHWH speaks in the first person, adding his own sanction (face-setting + karet) atop the community's death sentence — the offense is not only a capital crime but a personal affront to God, since it defiles his sanctuary and profanes his name even when the human court fails to act (cf. v. 4).

And a man who takes a wife and her mother, it is depravity; they shall burn him and them with fire, so that there will be no depravity among you.

Fifth case: a wife and her mother (cf. Lev 18:17)וְ
The chapter's only case sanctioned by burning rather than the standard stoning/execution formula, and its only case naming three parties liable (all three burned together). The noun זִמָּה, 'depravity, wicked scheme', frames the offense at both ends of the verse (inclusio), and the closing purpose clause ('so that there will be no depravity among you') makes the deterrent, community-protective function of the penalty explicit.

Shifting from third-person passive (תַּהֲרֹגוּ, 'you shall kill') for the man to a direct second-person imperative-force command regarding the animal, the verse extends the death penalty to the animal itself — its involvement, however involuntary, is treated as making it unfit to remain among the people (cf. Eighth case: sister-incest, karet penalty (cf. Lev 18:9)וְ
The chapter's first shift from מוֹת יוּמָת to the Niphal כרת formula: sibling incest is sanctioned by cutting-off 'in the sight of the children of their people' — public disgrace and divine excision rather than human execution. חֶסֶד (H2617), normally 'kindness, loyalty', bears its rare inverted sense 'disgrace, shame' here, a crux noted since antiquity (cf. And you shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother's sister or your father's sister, for he has laid bare his own flesh; they shall bear their iniquity.

Tenth case: aunt-incest, apodictic address (cf. Lev 18:12-13)וְ
Uniquely among vv. 10-21, this case reverts to direct second-person apodictic address ('you shall not') rather than third-person casuistic form, and its sanction is neither execution nor karet but the milder נָשָׂא עָוֺן, 'bear their iniquity' — the same formula closing v. 17, but here standing alone as the entire penalty.

The dietary separations of ch. 11 are invoked here as the everyday, embodied enactment of the theological separation just declared: the same root בדל used of YHWH's separating Israel from the peoples (v. 24, 26) governs Israel's own separating of clean from unclean creatures — imitatio Dei extended into the kitchen and the field.

The chapter's summit verse, resuming and completing v. 7's summons — now לִי, 'to/for me', makes explicit that Israel's holiness is possessive, belonging to YHWH; the closing purpose clause לִהְיוֹת לִי, 'to be mine', names election's goal as relationship, not merely separation for its own sake.

And a man or a woman in whom there is a mediumistic or necromantic spirit shall surely be put to death; they shall stone them with stones; their blood is upon them.

Closing case: the medium/necromancer's own execution — completes the v. 6 inclusioוְ
The chapter closes by returning to the אֹב/יִדְּעֹנִי pair of v. 6, but shifts from the client's karet to the practitioner's own execution by stoning — the same penalty and formula (מוֹת יוּמָתוּ...דְּמֵיהֶם בָּם) that opened the chapter in v. 2, giving the whole unit a ring structure: Molech and necromancy each governed by a divine-then-human sanction pair.
