The Book of Joshua, Chapter 21יהושע 21

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Joshua 21 completes the land division by giving Levi, landless among the tribes, forty-eight cities with pasturelands drawn from every other tribe's territory — including all six cities of refuge. The chapter closes the allotment section with a sweeping theological climax: YHWH gave all the promised land, granted rest on every side, and let not one good word fail.

Translation & textual notes

The chapter is essentially a register — forty-eight city names organized by Levitical clan and source tribe — and its textual history shows the instability typical of such lists: proper names are especially prone to scribal slippage. The clearest crux is the Kethiv/Qere at v.27, where the consonantal text reads גלון but is read גּוֹלָן to match the spelling at 20:8 and Deut 4:43. A parallel city-list survives at 1 Chronicles 6:54-81, and comparison exposes numerous small variants: Kibzaim (v.22) appears there as Jokmeam; Dimnah (v.35) as Rimmono; several other names differ slightly or are replaced by near-synonyms. Such divergences most likely reflect independent transmission of an old administrative list rather than deliberate revision. The Old Greek is generally shorter than the MT across Joshua, and in this chapter shows some sequence and name differences from the Hebrew, though the fourfold clan structure and the forty-eight total are shared by both witnesses. The double occurrence of 'Gath-rimmon' (vv.24, 25) — once for Dan, once for Manasseh — is not a duplication error but two distinct towns sharing a common toponym element ('winepress of the pomegranate'). None of these text-critical questions touch the chapter's substance: every witness agrees on the fourfold clan division, the six refuge cities embedded within the forty-eight, and the closing theological climax of vv.43-45.

So the sons of Israel gave to the Levites, out of their inheritance, at the command of YHWH, these cities with their pasturelands.

The request of v.2 is granted without debate; 'at the mouth of YHWH' (אֶל פִּי יְהוָה) repeats the divine-command grounding, and the gift is drawn 'from their inheritance' — each tribe surrenders cities from its own allotted portion, fulfilling Num 35 concretely.

So YHWH gave to Israel all the land that he had sworn to give to their fathers, and they took possession of it and settled in it.

Theological coda opens / chapter climaxand (wayyiqtol)
The chapter's theological center of gravity: the sweeping claim that 'all the land' promised to the patriarchs (Gen 12:7; 15:18-21) has now been given, possessed, and settled — voiced in deliberate tension with the 'land that remains' notices scattered through the book (13:1; 15:63; 16:10; 17:12), a tension the narrator does not attempt to harmonize away but lets stand as the book's own dialectic of promise and partial fulfillment.

The chapter's — and in many ways the whole conquest narrative's — capstone verdict: every promise (כָּל הַדָּבָר הַטּוֹב) has been fulfilled without remainder (לֹא־נָפַל דָּבָר, 'not a word fell'), a formula echoed at 23:14 and 1 Kgs 8:56; read alongside the not-yet notices elsewhere in Joshua, it functions as a theological affirmation of YHWH's total faithfulness operating on a level that does not require every square mile to be literally subdued.
