Theme

Babylonian curiosity, royal self-display, prophetic interrogation, and the first explicit exile oracle naming Babylon together make this short chapter the decisive hinge between Hezekiah's deliverance narratives and Isaiah's later horizon of judgment and restoration. It opens with what looks benign: letters and a gift arrive because the king of Babylon has heard of Hezekiah's illness and recovery. But the danger here is subtler than the Assyrian crisis. Hezekiah rejoices over the envoys and exposes everything: silver, gold, spices, precious oil, armory, treasuries, house, and dominion. Nothing is withheld. What Assyria could not seize by siege is voluntarily displayed before the future imperial power that will one day carry it away. Isaiah then enters not as court diplomat but as prophetic examiner. His questions force the scene into the light, and Hezekiah's answers confirm the full scope of what has happened. The judgment that follows is severe precisely because it is so measured. Days are coming when all the accumulated treasures of the Davidic house will be carried to Babylon, and even royal sons will become eunuchs in a foreign palace. This oracle therefore shifts the threat-axis of the book from immediate Assyrian pressure to the longer shadow of Babylonian exile. Hezekiah's closing response is submissive yet troubling, since he receives the word as good so long as peace and truth remain in his own days. Taken together, diplomatic courtesy, royal exposure, prophetic scrutiny, announced plunder, dynastic humiliation, and deferred disaster form a chapter where present relief gives way to the future cost of self-display and where Babylon first steps fully onto Isaiah's stage as the named destination of Judah's coming loss.

The Hebrew base text here follows the Masoretic Text in the Leningrad tradition as represented by the Westminster Leningrad Codex / MorphHB diplomatic stream imported from OSHB; distinctively copyrighted apparatus from BHS or BHQ is not reproduced. Four linked movements shape the chapter: the arrival of Babylon's letters and gift after news of Hezekiah's illness and recovery (v. 1), Hezekiah's delighted exposure of all his wealth and resources to the envoys (v. 2), Isaiah's interrogation about the visitors and about what they have seen (vv. 3-4), and the announced Babylonian removal of treasures and royal offspring together with Hezekiah's uneasy acceptance (vv. 5-8). Verse 1 should preserve the diplomatic courtesy of the opening without allowing it to lose its ominous force. Merodach-baladan is named as king of Babylon, and the sending of letters and a gift because he heard of the king's sickness and recovery should remain plain. The line introduces Babylon not yet as conqueror but as interested foreign power, and that distinction matters because the chapter's danger enters through prestige and attention rather than through siege. Verse 2 turns the whole scene and should be translated with the full breadth of the display. Hezekiah rejoices over them and shows the envoys the treasure house, silver, gold, spices, good oil, all the house of his vessels, and all that is found in his treasuries. The repeated comprehensiveness of the verse should remain audible. Nothing is left unseen in house or dominion. Translation should not abbreviate the catalog too aggressively, because the totality of exposure is the point. Verses 3-4 move into prophetic examination. Isaiah's questions about what the men said, where they came from, and what they saw should remain sharp and judicial in tone. Hezekiah's answer that they came from a far country, from Babylon, and that they saw all that is in his house should preserve both distance and totality. The repetition here functions as evidentiary confirmation before judgment. Verses 5-7 then introduce the exile oracle and should be rendered with restrained weight. Verse 5's command to hear the word of YHWH of hosts should remain solemn. Verse 6 explicitly names the coming transport of all that is in the house and all that the fathers stored up until this day to Babylon; not a thing shall be left. The recently displayed wealth becomes the future spoil. Verse 7 presses further by naming royal sons who will come from Hezekiah and become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon. Translation should preserve both dynastic descent and humiliating court service, since the oracle reaches into David's own line. Verse 8 closes with one of the chapter's most morally difficult notes. Hezekiah calls the word of YHWH good because peace and truth will remain in his own days. The response should not be softened into uncomplicated piety. It holds submission to prophetic truth together with a narrowing of relief to the king's own lifetime. Taken together, the chapter should therefore be translated as a brief but crucial movement where Babylon enters the narrative as admired visitor and leaves it as named destination of Judah's future plunder and dynastic abasement.
