The Book of Genesis, Chapter 36בְּרֵאשִׁית ל״ו

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Esau's non-covenantal line is gathered here into a long and carefully structured record of wives, sons, chiefs, Horite associations, kings, and territorial settlement. What appears at first glance to be archival surplus becomes instead a theological and genealogical counterpart to Jacob's line: Esau too becomes a people, acquires land, generates ruling houses, and fills Seir with an organized polity. The movement therefore both honors real historical expansion and clarifies distinction. Esau is repeatedly identified as Edom, his household separates from Jacob's because the land cannot sustain them together, and his descendants are traced through chiefs and kings before Israel's monarchy. Kinship without covenant centrality, abundance without the chosen line, and political formation outside but alongside Israel's ancestral story all come into view together. Memory, geography, ethnicity, and rulership are thus woven into the canonical presentation of Edom's established identity.

Translation & textual notes

The Hebrew base text here follows the Masoretic Text in the Leningrad tradition as represented by the Westminster Leningrad Codex / MorphHB diplomatic stream imported from OSHB; distinctively copyrighted apparatus from BHS or BHQ is not reproduced. Esau's line comes into settled historical focus here through households, chiefs, territorial integration, and kingship, showing Edom's durable expansion alongside but outside the covenant line. Verse 1 and again verse 8-9 insist on the identification עֵשָׂו הוּא אֱדוֹם, and translators should preserve the repetitive formula because it stabilizes the ethnic-political identity being traced. Verses 2-5 present Esau's wives and sons, but the names do not align mechanically with every parallel notice elsewhere in Genesis; the MT should be rendered as it stands without forcing harmonization into the text. Verse 6's long inventory formula deliberately echoes patriarchal migration notices and leads into the separation from Jacob. Verse 7 is especially important because the reason for parting resembles the earlier patriarchal separation pattern: their possessions are too great for joint dwelling, and the land cannot bear them together because of their livestock. Verse 8's settlement in Seir formally relocates Esau's line into its durable land-base. Verses 9-19 then move from descendants to אַלּוּפִים, usually rendered chiefs or clan leaders; the term should not be flattened into a vague noble rank, since it marks social-political structuring within Edom. Verses 20-30 introduce the sons and chiefs of Seir the Horite, showing that Edom's land-history includes pre- or co-resident populations rather than a vacuum. Verse 24 contains one of the narrative's famous cruxes: עֲנָה is said to have found the יֵמִם in the wilderness while grazing the donkeys of Zibeon his father. The exact reference of יֵמִם remains disputed and should be translated cautiously rather than overdefined. Verses 31-39 list the kings who reigned in Edom before any king reigned over the Israelites, and that temporal clause must be preserved in its full force; it is one of the narrative's key historical-theological signals. The king list is not dynastic in simple father-son succession, but a sequence of rulers from differing cities. Verse 39's personal and familial details should be retained carefully despite the density of names. Verses 40-43 then return to the chiefs of Esau according to families, places, and names, closing the narrative with settled territorial identity. The final line again anchors Edom in Esau himself: he is Esau, father of Edom. Versification follows the MT.
