The Book of Exodus, Chapter 22שמות 22

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Case law on theft, negligent damage, and bailment gives way to prohibitions on sorcery, bestiality, and idolatry, then to YHWH's own compassion laws for the sojourner, widow, orphan, and poor debtor, grounded in Israel's memory of Egyptian bondage. It closes claiming firstfruits, firstborn, and a people holy to their God.

Translation & textual notes

This chapter's verse numbers follow the Masoretic Text, which divides differently from English Bibles at the chapter boundary: MT Exodus 21:37 (the ox/sheep theft law) corresponds to English Exodus 22:1, so MT 22:1 = English 22:2, and every verse in this chapter is numbered one lower than its English counterpart (MT v.30 = English v.31). Two ketiv/qere pairs occur in the received consonantal-vs-read tradition (v.4 בעירה/בְּעִירוֹ 'his livestock'; v.26 כסותה/כְסוּתוֹ 'his covering'), both harmless orthographic doublets rather than substantive variants, and both preserved here as adjacent word-entries per the source markup. The chapter's civil/casuistic case law (vv.1-16), framed throughout with אִם/כִּי protases, gives way at v.17 to apodictic 'you shall/shall not' and capital-sentence formulas, then to explicit first-person divine speech at vv.22-23 and 26-30 — a shift that marks the compassion laws (sojourner, widow, orphan, the poor debtor, the pledge-holder) as directly enforced by YHWH himself rather than by human courts, the clearest instance in the Covenant Code of law grounded in Israel's own remembered vulnerability (v.20) and in God's own gracious character (חַנוּן, v.26).

If a thief is caught breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there is no bloodguilt for him.

Casuistic case law (new case, protasis-apodosis)asyndeton
Opens the chapter's second theft case (continuing directly from the ox/sheep theft law at the end of ch.21) with the standard אִם-protasis; the apodosis exempts the householder from bloodguilt when a night-breaking thief is killed in the act — darkness makes the thief's intent, and the risk to the householder, unverifiable.

Contrastive casuistic continuationאִם
Reverses the ruling of v.1 by changing only the time: daylight removes the killer's excuse, making him liable for bloodguilt; the verse then supplies the ordinary civil remedy — restitution, or sale into debt-slavery if insolvent — as the true penalty replacing killing.

For every breach of trust, whether it concerns an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any lost property about which one says, 'This is it,' the case of both parties shall come before God (the judges); whomever God (the judges) condemns shall pay double to his neighbor.

Casuistic generalization (disputed-property tribunal)asyndeton
Generalizes the preceding bailment cases into a comprehensive rule covering any disputed claim to lost or entrusted property, resolved by a divine/judicial tribunal (אֱלֹהִים, echoing v.7's oath) rather than self-help, with double restitution imposed on whichever party is found guilty.

Divine speech (first-person enforcement)אִם
YHWH speaks in the first person for the only time in the chapter, personally guaranteeing enforcement of the widow/orphan law — the double infinitive-absolute construction ('afflict...afflict', 'hear...hear') binds the certainty of divine hearing to the certainty of the crime, making this law directly policed by God rather than human courts.

Divine speech (measure-for-measure sanction)asyndeton
The threatened sanction is a precise mirror-image reversal (measure-for-measure): those who make widows and orphans of others will, by divine judgment in war, make widows and orphans of their own households — reinforcing that this law's enforcement lies wholly with God.

for that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin; in what else shall he sleep? And if he cries out to me, I will hear, for I am gracious.

Divine speech (motive clause for the pledge law)כִּי
Grounds the sunset deadline of v.25 in concrete human need (a poor man's cloak as his only blanket) and, like vv.22-23, escalates to direct divine speech, naming YHWH's own graciousness (חַנּוּן) as the reason the law must be kept — compassion is here made a divine character trait, not merely a legal technicality. You shall not delay to offer from the fullness of your harvest and from the outflow of your presses; the firstborn of your sons you shall give to me.

Apodictic law with divine first-person (firstfruits and firstborn)asyndeton
Moves from social ethics to cultic obligation, still in YHWH's first-person voice: firstfruits (solid and liquid) and the firstborn son belong to God by right and must be rendered without delay, continuing the motif of divine ownership begun with 'my people' in v.24.

Apodictic law with divine first-person (firstborn livestock)asyndeton
Extends the firstborn-dedication law of v.28 to firstborn livestock, adding the humane stipulation (paralleled in Lev 22:27) that the young animal first nurse a full week — cultic obligation is again shaped by compassionate concern for the animal, mirroring the human compassion laws of vv.20-27.

Apodictic law with divine first-person (holiness, closing charge)asyndeton
Closes the chapter by grounding the dietary prohibition in Israel's corporate identity as YHWH's 'holy men' — the same טְרֵפָה vocabulary that governed the bailee's legal defense in v.12 now governs table purity, uniting the chapter's civil, humanitarian, and cultic material under a single holiness rationale.
