The Book of Exodus, Chapter 20שמות 20

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

God himself speaks the Ten Words to Israel: exclusive loyalty, the ban on images, reverence for the divine name, and sabbath rest grounded in creation; honor of parents bridges to laws guarding life, marriage, property, truth, and desire. The terrified people beg Moses to mediate, closing with instructions for a simple altar.

Translation & textual notes

This chapter preserves two well-known divergent enumerations of 'the ten words' (עֲשֶׂרֶת הַדְּבָרִים, 34:28) laid over one and the same Masoretic text and verse sequence. Jewish tradition (following the Talmud and most rabbinic sources) treats v.2 ('I am YHWH your God who brought you out...') as the first 'word' in its own right and combines the prohibitions of vv.3-6 (other gods and images) into the second; the Reformed/Orthodox tradition (following Origen, Philo, and Josephus) instead makes vv.3 and 4-6 two distinct commandments (no other gods; no images) and folds v.2 into the preamble; the Lutheran and Roman Catholic tradition (following Augustine) likewise combines vv.3-6 into one commandment but then splits the tenth (v.17) into two — coveting the neighbor's wife (17a) as one command and coveting his house and possessions (17b) as another — to preserve the total of ten. All three traditions agree on the wording of the Hebrew text itself; the divergence is entirely in how the sense-units are counted and numbered, not in the underlying MT. Verse 5's motive clause calls YHWH אֵל קַנָּא, 'a jealous God' — קִנְאָה here is the ardent, exclusive claim of a covenant partner (the marital/suzerain metaphor pervasive in the prophets), not petty envy — who 'visits' (פֹּקֵד) the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation; this is best read not as inherited guilt transferred to innocent descendants (contrast the corrective principle of Deut 24:16 and Ezek 18) but as the natural, multi-generational entail of persistent, communal idolatry within households and lineages that continue in that same hatred of God (לְשֹׂנְאָי, v.5b) — and it is immediately and deliberately outweighed by the 'thousands' (of generations) who receive חֶסֶד in v.6. Finally, this chapter grounds the sabbath command explicitly in creation — YHWH's own rest after making the heavens, the earth, and the sea in six days (v.11, echoing Gen 2:1-3 nearly verbatim) — whereas the parallel Decalogue of Deut 5:12-15 grounds the identical command instead in Israel's liberation from Egyptian slavery, with no mention of creation; the two motive clauses are complementary rather than contradictory (creation establishes the day's universal rhythm, the exodus its covenantal, humanitarian rationale for including servants and animals) but constitute one of the clearest theological differences between Exodus' and Deuteronomy's versions of the Decalogue.
