The Book of Exodus, Chapter 12שמות 12

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The Passover is instituted -- the lamb slain, its blood marking doorposts, the meal eaten in haste -- as a perpetual ordinance and catechism for generations to come; at midnight every Egyptian firstborn falls, Pharaoh finally capitulates, and Israel marches out after four hundred thirty years, a mixed multitude in tow.

Translation & textual notes

Exodus 12 is textually stable in the Masoretic tradition; the Samaritan Pentateuch and 4QpaleoExod witnesses show only minor orthographic variation, and the Septuagint largely follows the MT's order and content, with occasional harmonizing pluses (e.g., at v. 40, where LXX and SP add 'and in the land of Canaan' to the 430-year figure, an ancient attempt to reconcile Exod 12:40 with the shorter genealogical spans implied elsewhere and with Gal 3:17's reckoning). The chapter's most significant interpretive crux is not textual but theological-etymological: v. 2's 'this month shall be for you the beginning of months' resets Israel's calendar so that the month of the exodus (later called Aviv/Nisan) becomes the first month of the religious year, even though the civil year continued to be reckoned from the autumn (cf. the 'turn of the year' language in 23:16; 34:22) — producing Israel's enduring dual calendar. The name of the festival itself, פֶּסַח (pesaḥ), first appears at v. 11 and is explained by the verb פָסַח (pāsaḥ) in vv. 13, 23, and 27 — 'to pass over, to spare, to protect' (not, as sometimes popularly rendered, merely 'to skip'); the verb likely carries a connotation of protective straddling or hovering over the threatened house, making 'Passover' at once a historical description (the LORD passed over/spared the marked homes) and the name of the rite that commemorates it forever after.
