The Book of Zephaniah, Chapter 1צפניה 1

דְּבַר יְהוָ֣ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָ֗ה אֶל צְפַנְיָה֙ בֶּן כּוּשִׁ֣י בֶן גְּדַלְיָ֔ה בֶּן אֲמַרְיָ֖ה בֶּן חִזְקִיָּ֑ה בִּימֵ֛י יֹאשִׁיָּ֥הוּ בֶן אָמ֖וֹן מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה

The word of YHWH which came to Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.

אָסֹ֨ף אָסֵ֜ף כֹּ֗ל מֵעַ֛ל פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָ֖ה נְאֻם יְהוָֽה

I will utterly consume all from off the land, says YHWH.

אָסֵ֨ף אָדָ֜ם וּבְהֵמָ֗ה אָסֵ֤ף עוֹף הַשָּׁמַ֨יִם֙ וּדְגֵ֣י הַיָּ֔ם וְהַמַּכְשֵׁל֖וֹת אֶת הָרְשָׁעִ֑ים וְהִכְרַתִּ֣י אֶת הָאָדָ֗ם מֵעַ֛ל פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָ֖ה נְאֻם יְהוָֽה

I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, says YHWH.

וְנָטִ֤יתִי יָדִי֙ עַל יְהוּדָ֔ה וְעַ֖ל כָּל יוֹשְׁבֵ֣י יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְהִכְרַתִּ֞י מִן הַמָּק֤וֹם הַזֶּה֙ אֶת שְׁאָ֣ר הַבַּ֔עַל אֶת שֵׁ֥ם הַכְּמָרִ֖ים עִם הַכֹּהֲנִֽים

I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, the name of the Chemarims with the priests;

וְאֶת הַמִּשְׁתַּחֲוִ֥ים עַל הַגַּגּ֖וֹת לִצְבָ֣א הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וְאֶת הַמִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוִים֙ הַנִּשְׁבָּעִ֣ים לַֽיהוָ֔ה וְהַנִּשְׁבָּעִ֖ים בְּמַלְכָּֽם

And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship that swear by YHWH, and that swear by Malcham;

וְאֶת הַנְּסוֹגִ֖ים מֵאַחֲרֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַאֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹֽא בִקְשׁ֥וּ אֶת יְהוָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א דְרָשֻֽׁהוּ

And them that are turned back from YHWH; and that have not sought YHWH, nor enquired for him.

הַ֕ס מִפְּנֵ֖י אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה כִּ֤י קָרוֹב֙ י֣וֹם יְהוָ֔ה כִּֽי הֵכִ֧ין יְהוָ֛ה זֶ֖בַח הִקְדִּ֥ישׁ קְרֻאָֽיו

Hold your peace at the presence of YHWH YHWH: for the day of YHWH at hand: for YHWH has prepared a sacrifice, he has bid his guests.

וְהָיָ֗ה בְּיוֹם֙ זֶ֣בַח יְהוָ֔ה וּפָקַדְתִּ֥י עַל הַשָּׂרִ֖ים וְעַל בְּנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְעַ֥ל כָּל הַלֹּבְשִׁ֖ים מַלְבּ֥וּשׁ נָכְרִֽי

And it shall come to pass in the day of YHWH's sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king's children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel.

וּפָקַדְתִּ֗י עַ֧ל כָּל הַדּוֹלֵ֛ג עַל הַמִּפְתָּ֖ן בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא הַֽמְמַלְאִ֛ים בֵּ֥ית אֲדֹנֵיהֶ֖ם חָמָ֥ס וּמִרְמָֽה

In the same day also will I punish all those that leap on the threshold, which fill their masters' houses with violence and deceit.

וְהָיָה֩ בַיּ֨וֹם הַה֜וּא נְאֻם יְהוָ֗ה ק֤וֹל צְעָקָה֙ מִשַּׁ֣עַר הַדָּגִ֔ים וִֽילָלָ֖ה מִן הַמִּשְׁנֶ֑ה וְשֶׁ֥בֶר גָּד֖וֹל מֵהַגְּבָעֽוֹת

And it shall come to pass in that day, says YHWH, the noise of a cry from the fish gate, and an howling from the second, and a great crashing from the hills.

הֵילִ֖ילוּ יֹשְׁבֵ֣י הַמַּכְתֵּ֑שׁ כִּ֤י נִדְמָה֙ כָּל עַ֣ם כְּנַ֔עַן נִכְרְת֖וּ כָּל נְטִ֥ילֵי כָֽסֶף

Howl, you inhabitants of Maktesh, for all the merchant people are cut down; all they that bear silver are cut off.

וְהָיָה֙ בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔יא אֲחַפֵּ֥שׂ אֶת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם בַּנֵּר֑וֹת וּפָקַדְתִּ֣י עַל הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים הַקֹּֽפְאִים֙ עַל שִׁמְרֵיהֶ֔ם הָאֹֽמְרִים֙ בִּלְבָבָ֔ם לֹֽא יֵיטִ֥יב יְהוָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א יָרֵֽעַ

And it shall come to pass at that time, I will search Jerusalem with candles, and punish the men that are settled on their lees: that say in their heart, YHWH will not do good, neither will he do evil.

וְהָיָ֤ה חֵילָם֙ לִמְשִׁסָּ֔ה וּבָתֵּיהֶ֖ם לִשְׁמָמָ֑ה וּבָנ֤וּ בָתִּים֙ וְלֹ֣א יֵשֵׁ֔בוּ וְנָטְע֣וּ כְרָמִ֔ים וְלֹ֥א יִשְׁתּ֖וּ אֶת יֵינָֽם

Therefore their goods shall become a booty, and their houses a desolation: they shall also build houses, but not inhabit ; and they shall plant vineyards, but not drink the wine thereof.

קָר֤וֹב יוֹם יְהוָה֙ הַגָּד֔וֹל קָר֖וֹב וּמַהֵ֣ר מְאֹ֑ד ק֚וֹל י֣וֹם יְהוָ֔ה מַ֥ר צֹרֵ֖חַ שָׁ֥ם גִּבּֽוֹר

The great day of YHWH near, near, and hasteth greatly, the voice of the day of YHWH: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly.

י֥וֹם עֶבְרָ֖ה הַיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא י֧וֹם צָרָ֣ה וּמְצוּקָ֗ה י֤וֹם שֹׁאָה֙ וּמְשׁוֹאָ֔ה י֥וֹם חֹ֨שֶׁךְ֙ וַאֲפֵלָ֔ה י֥וֹם עָנָ֖ן וַעֲרָפֶֽל

That day a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,

י֥וֹם שׁוֹפָ֖ר וּתְרוּעָ֑ה עַ֚ל הֶעָרִ֣ים הַבְּצֻר֔וֹת וְעַ֖ל הַפִּנּ֥וֹת הַגְּבֹהֽוֹת

A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers.

וַהֲצֵרֹ֣תִי לָאָדָ֗ם וְהָֽלְכוּ֙ כַּֽעִוְרִ֔ים כִּ֥י לַֽיהוָ֖ה חָטָ֑אוּ וְשֻׁפַּ֤ךְ דָּמָם֙ כֶּֽעָפָ֔ר וּלְחֻמָ֖ם כַּגְּלָלִֽים

And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against YHWH: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung.

גַּם כַּסְפָּ֨ם גַּם זְהָבָ֜ם לֹֽא יוּכַ֣ל לְהַצִּילָ֗ם בְּיוֹם֙ עֶבְרַ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה וּבְאֵשׁ֙ קִנְאָת֔וֹ תֵּאָכֵ֖ל כָּל הָאָ֑רֶץ כִּֽי כָלָ֤ה אַךְ נִבְהָלָה֙ יַֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה אֵ֥ת כָּל יֹשְׁבֵ֖י הָאָֽרֶץ

Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of YHWH's wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.
