The Book of Joshua, Chapter 19יהושע 19

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The final six lots of Joshua's land division. Simeon is absorbed into Judah's surplus; Zebulun, Issachar, Asher, and Naphtali receive Galilee and an unconquered Phoenician coast; Dan's lot is lost, so the tribe migrates north and renames Laish as Dan. The chapter closes with Joshua's own town, Timnath-serah, and the colophon sealing the allotment at Shiloh.

Translation & textual notes

Joshua 19 is a register chapter and the MT preserves its usual roster-text difficulties rather than major variant readings. Two tally mismatches recur: the thirteen cities of v. 6 against fourteen names in vv. 2-6, most plausibly resolved by reading בְּאֵר שֶׁבַע וְשֶׁבַע (v. 2) as one town (Beer-sheba) split into two list-entries by scribal duplication rather than two genuine sites; and similar minor undercounts in Asher's and Naphtali's tallies (vv. 30, 38), typical of this chapter's loose arithmetic outside Issachar's cleanly-matching sixteen (v. 22). MT twice writes out a full ketiv/qere doublet rather than marking the qere marginally: וְשַׁחֲצִימָה (v. 22, Issachar's Shahazumah) and וְהָיוּ (v. 29, Asher's border-endpoints), both likely accidental duplications during copying. The chapter's most debated crux is v. 34's 'Judah... at the Jordan toward the sunrise' as a supposed neighbor of Naphtali far in the north — no emendation or explanation has won consensus, and the honest reading is that MT's text here remains unresolved. Asher's border description (vv. 28-29) names Sidon and the 'fortified city of Tyre' as boundary markers despite neither ever being conquered by Israel (cf. 13:4-6), showing the border-list records an aspirational maximal extent alongside realistic settlement notices elsewhere in the same chapter. The chapter closes with a formal colophon (v. 51) sealing the entire seven-chapter land-division section that began at 13:1.

Then the second lot went out for Simeon, for the tribe of the sons of Simeon according to their families; and their inheritance was in the midst of the inheritance of the sons of Judah.

Scene-opening notice (second of seven lots)asyndeton
Opens with the recurring wayyiqtol formula that heads each tribal lot in this chapter (cf. vv. 10, 17, 24, 32, 40). The closing clause flags Simeon's anomaly — enclave territory 'in the midst' of Judah — which v. 9 will explain as compensation for Judah's oversized share.

Border itinerary, Tyre/Sidon coastal legasyndeton
The most striking verse of Asher's border description, naming the fortified city of Tyre itself as a marker — territory never actually possessed by Israel, showing this border list records an aspirational or maximal ideal extent alongside realistic settlement notices elsewhere in the chapter. The chapter's one true narrative episode, compressing the far longer account of Judges 17-18 into a single sentence with a chain of six wayyiqtol verbs.
