The Book of Joshua, Chapter 1יהושע 1

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Joshua 1 recasts succession as transferred presence, not vacancy: Moses is dead, but YHWH commissions Joshua with land, invincibility, and unfailing presence, bound to torah meditation rather than martial confidence. Camp orders and the Transjordan tribes' pledge then turn that courage into organized, communal readiness for the Jordan crossing.

Translation & textual notes

The chapter's Hebrew text, following the Leningrad Codex as represented in OSHB, is well preserved with no major textual crises. Versional witnesses (LXX, Peshitta, Targum Jonathan) diverge from the MT only in minor stylistic ways here, not in substance. The Old Greek renders the chapter closely but smooths some of the MT's repetition: the identical formula חֲזַק וֶאֱמָץ recurring in vv. 6, 7, and 9 is not always translated with identical Greek vocabulary, and the LXX occasionally supplies connective particles the MT leaves asyndetic. Verse 15's closing geographic notice, בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן מִזְרַח הַשָּׁמֶשׁ ('beyond the Jordan, toward the sunrise'), largely restates v. 14's phrase and has sometimes been read by commentators as a secondary specification rather than a scribal corruption; no Hebrew manuscript evidence supports omitting it, and the MT reading is retained here without emendation. The chapter's vocabulary is characteristically Deuteronomistic (מְשָׁרֵת, הָגָה, the שָׁמַר/עָשָׂה pairing, חֲמֻשִׁים), consistent with Joshua's close literary relationship to Deuteronomy, and this diction is stable across the textual tradition. Versification follows the MT throughout, with no chapter- or verse-division discrepancies against LXX in this chapter.

Narrative frame (asyndetic opening)asyndeton
The chapter — and the book — opens with wayyiqtol narrative syntax continuing an existing story; the vav-consecutive presumes Deuteronomy as its antecedent. The verse frames Joshua doubly: by patronymic (son of Nun) and by subordinate office (Moses' attendant), setting up the reversal that follows immediately in v. 2.

Direct divine speech — the commission's opening (asyndetic statement + adversative עַתָּה)וְ (and/now)
The verse pivots on the terse nominal clause 'Moses my servant is dead' followed abruptly by the imperative קוּם 'arise' — the shortest possible transition from mourning to mission. עַתָּה ('now') marks the hinge from the old era to the new command.

The chapter's most cited verse: the torah scroll is to remain literally in Joshua's MOUTH (recited aloud) and be the object of continual הָגָה ('murmur, meditate' — the same verb used of a lion's growl and later of the righteous in Ps 1:2). Success and wisdom are explicitly consequent ('for then... and then') on this practice, not on martial skill.
