The Book of Job (MT) — Interlinear Summary
A consolidated companion to the Masoretic-Text Job data set: each chapter rendered as a six-tier Hebrew reverse-interlinear (Hebrew · gloss · parsing · syntax · semantic force · lexical note), with per-verse discourse analysis and a chapter argument-outline.
This document gathers, for each annotated chapter, the theme, the argument outline, and the textual / exegetical note (the text_note of each file, with the shared critical-text preface removed since it is stated once above). The righteous sufferer, contested wisdom, and the LORD's answer from the whirlwind. The Hebrew follows the Masoretic Text in the Leningrad tradition (Westminster Leningrad Codex / OSHB); distinctively copyrighted apparatus is not reproduced, and Hebrew (MT) versification is used throughout.

Job
Job 1 — איוב 1
Outline.
- A. 1:1–5 — The exemplary man of Uz. Exposition: a fairy-tale opening (inverted word order, non-Israelite setting) introduces Job's four-fold blamelessness, his sevens-and-threes household and wealth, and his scrupulous preemptive piety — establishing both the perfection the wager will test and, in the euphemistic 'bless' of v. 5, the chapter's key word.
- B. 1:6–12 — The heavenly council: the wager. Scene shift to heaven: among the sons of God the satan — a title, not yet a name — answers YHWH's boast about Job with the book's central question ('does Job fear God for nothing?') and proposes the test; YHWH grants power over all Job has but draws one line around his person.
- C. 1:13–19 — The four blows: the messenger relay. Scene shift back to earth: four disasters in alternation (Sabeans, fire of God, Chaldeans, the great wind) strip away livestock, servants, and finally all ten children, each report interlocked by the interruption formula and sealed by the identical refrain 'and I alone have escaped to tell you' — a relentless, mechanized cascade of loss.
- D. 1:20–22 — Job's worship and the narrator's verdict. Resolution of the first test: Job performs the full mourning ritual yet ends in worship, and his poem-like confession blesses the name of YHWH — the key verb now in its true sense, precisely where cursing was predicted; the narrator's closing verdict ('Job did not sin, nor give unseemliness to God') answers the wager while leaving the dialogues room to probe further.
Textual note. The MT of Job 1 is prose and textually stable — the Leningrad Codex (here via WLC/OSHB) presents no major cruxes, in sharp contrast to the notoriously difficult poetry that follows. Three small Ketiv-Qere pairs occur: v. 4 'their sisters', v. 10 'you', and v. 21 'I came out' — all routine defective spellings corrected by the Qere and preserved in this layout as separate ketiv/qere word entries. The chapter's most famous scribal feature is the euphemistic use of בֵּרַךְ 'bless' where 'curse' is meant (vv. 5, 11; again 2:5, 9): scribes would not write a verb of cursing with God as its object, so the antonym stands in the text and the reader supplies the intended sense — a reverential substitution most scholars judge to have been made in composition or early transmission (it does not appear in the official tiqqune sopherim lists). Verse 21 then uses בֵּרַךְ in its true positive sense, resolving the wordplay. Note also the anomalous 2fs suffix לָךְ 'to you' in the fourfold messenger refrain (vv. 15-19), best taken as an archaic or dialectal 2ms form rather than a change of addressee. The LXX of Job runs about one-sixth shorter than the MT overall, but ch. 1 corresponds closely; its one notable plus expands Job's confession in v. 21 ('as it seemed good to the Lord, so it came to pass').

Job 19 — איוב 19
Outline.
- A. 19:1–6 — The wounded opening: ten times disgraced, and God has bent me. Job opens by turning the friends' own 'how long' rhetoric back on them, protesting their relentless verbal cruelty ('these ten times'). Even granting a hypothetical fault (v.4), he insists it is his own private affair. He then pivots (v.5-6) to the true cause: not to be argued with the friends but demanded as knowledge - it is God, not Job, who has 'bent' him, deliberately echoing Bildad's own accusatory verb from 8:3.
- B. 19:7–12 — God as assailant: the siege-warfare cascade. A sustained military/hunting metaphor: Job's legal cry of 'Violence!' goes unanswered; his road is walled up and darkened; his glory and crown are stripped; his hope is uprooted like a tree (echoing 14:7); God's anger burns and counts him an enemy; and finally God's troops cast up a siege-ramp and encamp around his tent. The stanza escalates from isolated acts of hostility to a full-scale military campaign against a single, humble dwelling.
- C. 19:13–19 — Total abandonment: the alienation catalogue. A systematic inventory of every human relationship stripped away, moving from the most intimate outward and back: brothers, acquaintances, kinsmen and close friends who forget him; then household guests and maidservants who treat him as a foreigner; his own servant who will not answer him; his wife repulsed by his breath; his own kin loathing him; street children despising him; and, climactically, the friends of his intimate council turning against him.
- D. 19:20 — The body's ruin: escaped by the skin of my teeth. A single, famous verse pivoting from social to physical devastation: Job's bones cling to skin and flesh with nothing between, and he has barely survived - 'by the skin of my teeth,' an idiom whose precise sense (gums? bare margin? corrupted text?) remains genuinely uncertain.
- E. 19:21–22 — The appeal: pity me, for the hand of God has touched me. The emotional center of the chapter: a doubled, urgent imperative begging the friends for basic compassion, grounded not in admitted guilt but in the fact of divine affliction. Job then rebukes them for pursuing him 'like God himself,' insatiably feeding on his suffering rather than showing the mercy their friendship should supply.
- F. 19:23–27 — The monument wish and the Redeemer: the theological summit. Job's wish for a permanent, indestructible record of his words (written, then inscribed in a scroll, then engraved with iron and lead in rock forever) gives way to something greater than any human monument: the confession that his Redeemer (גֹּאֵל) lives and will one day stand upon the dust to vindicate him. The notoriously ambiguous v.26 ('from/without my flesh') and the threefold insistence on seeing 'for myself, and not a stranger's [eyes]' answer the alienation catalogue of vv.13-19, closing in exhausted, aching longing rather than resolved triumph.
- G. 19:28–29 — The warning: fear the sword, for there is a judgment. Job closes by quoting the friends' anticipated self-justifying reasoning - that they have found 'the root of the matter' in him and may righteously keep pursuing him - only to warn that such presumption itself invites the sword of divine judgment, ending on the famously disputed Kethiv/Qere crux word for 'judgment.'
Textual note. The Hebrew base text follows the Masoretic Text in the Leningrad tradition (WLC/OSHB). Job 19 carries several major textual cruxes that resist a single confessional reading. V.17's וְחַנֹּתִי is lexically puzzling: MT points it from חנן ('plead'), awkward beside זָרָה ('is repulsive'); many posit a rare or corrupted form meaning 'I stink/am loathsome' instead. V.20's 'skin of my teeth' is proverbial precisely because its literal referent (gums? bare margin? corruption?) is obscure, and no solution commands consensus. The summit, vv.25-27, bears the heaviest weight in the book: גֹּאֲלִי ('my Redeemer') draws on the kinsman-redeemer/blood-avenger institution (Lev 25; Num 35); whether the referent is God himself, a distinct heavenly witness (cf. 16:19), or left deliberately open is contested. V.26's מִבְּשָׂרִי is the crux of cruxes - מִן may be privative ('without my flesh,' a vision beyond bodily death) or a vantage sense ('from my flesh,' embodied) - and both readings are grammatically defensible, compounded by disputed syntax in the surrounding זֹאת and נִקְּפוּ. Later Christian and Jewish reception of vv.25-26 as resurrection intimations is real and important, but reads later categories onto a narrower, more forensic Hebrew claim. V.29 closes on the Kethiv/Qere crux שדין/שַׁדּוּן, generally linked to דִּין 'judgment' but of disputed form. Versification follows the MT.
