The Book of Genesis, Chapter 32בְּרֵאשִׁית ל״ב

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Return now turns from release out of Aram to fearful re-entry into the land promised by God. Divine reassurance, diplomatic caution, strategic division, humbled prayer, costly appeasement, nocturnal struggle, bodily wounding, renaming, and survival are bound together in a single movement that prepares for Jacob's meeting with Esau by first bringing Jacob himself into crisis before God. The opening joins Laban's departure to an angelic encounter at Mahanaim, so that Jacob's homeward road is marked at once by both human vulnerability and divine accompaniment. Yet the report of Esau's approach with four hundred men turns that reassurance into urgency. Jacob responds with the characteristic mixture that has marked his story all along: he calculates, divides, sends, and scripts, but he also prays with unusual candor, confessing his unworthiness and pressing God with God's own promise. The deepest turn, however, comes only after the household and possessions have crossed the Jabbok and Jacob is left alone. There the patriarch who has long struggled with brother, father, and uncle now wrestles through the night with the mysterious divine opponent who wounds him even while blessing him. The result is not the removal of danger but the transformation of the man who must face it. Jacob becomes Israel, sunrise breaks over Peniel, and the close leaves both a limp and a memorial practice. Return is thus presented not as a simple geographical homecoming, but as a passage through fear, prayer, humiliation, and God-marked transformation.

Translation & textual notes

The Hebrew base text here follows the Masoretic Text in the Leningrad tradition as represented by the Westminster Leningrad Codex / MorphHB diplomatic stream imported from OSHB; distinctively copyrighted apparatus from BHS or BHQ is not reproduced. A decisive threshold in the Jacob cycle stands here, where release from Laban gives way not immediately to reunion, but to dread, prayer, strategic appeasement, and the night encounter from which Israel receives his name. The opening contains a well-known versification seam: in many English Bibles the farewell of Laban belongs to the close of Genesis 31, whereas MT Genesis 32 begins with that departure notice and only then turns to Jacob's road and the meeting with the מלאכי אלהים. Verses 2-3 are compact but important. The same word מלאכים then reappears in verses 4-7 for Jacob's human messengers to Esau, and the echo is almost certainly deliberate: the divine messengers of Mahanaim are followed at once by Jacob's own attempt to manage the human crisis ahead. The dual form מחנים likewise invites attention, since the narrative soon speaks of Jacob dividing his people into two camps; whether the name directly means two camps or preserves a more layered memorial force, the resonance is central to the narrative's literary shape. In verses 5-6 Jacob's message is densely diplomatic. The rhetoric of my lord Esau and your servant Jacob should not be softened, since the self-abasing address is part of Jacob's strategy, and with Laban I have sojourned and remained until now explains both his long absence and his posture as one who has not returned as a conqueror. Verse 8's fear and distress are followed by the division into two camps, and verse 11's קטנתי מכל החסדים ומכל האמת is one of the narrative's theological centers: Jacob speaks not with vague modesty but with deepened awareness of his own littleness before the covenant loyalty and faithfulness God has shown him. The line with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps binds memory of exposure to present abundance. Verse 12's אם על בנים is a stark idiom and should retain its violent force rather than being sentimentalized. The prayer climaxes in verse 13 by pressing God with God's own promise of good and innumerable seed. Verse 14's מן הבא בידו is idiomatic for what came to hand, while מנחה here is not a cultic offering but a diplomatic gift or tribute. The gift strategy of verses 17-22 turns on repeated face-language: אכפרה פניו, אראה פניו, and אולי ישא פני. The social sense is appeasement and favorable reception, yet the vocabulary also carries wider resonance from atonement and face-to-face encounter. Verses 23-24 note Jacob's eleven children, an exact detail before Benjamin's birth, and move everything across the Jabbok so that verse 25 may leave Jacob alone. The famous ויאבק ... יבק sound-play contributes to the compact strangeness of the scene, and the figure is first called only a man, though Jacob's interpretation later renders the encounter explicitly theophanic. Verse 26's לא יכל לו should not be weakened; the conflict is real, and the touch to the hip dislocates rather than lightly brushes the joint. Verse 29 gives the narrative's naming crux: Israel is explained in the narrative itself through striving with God and with men and prevailing, even though the exact philological shape of the name has long been discussed. Verse 30 withholds the other's name while giving Jacob blessing, preserving the mystery of the encounter. In verses 31-32 the Peniel/Penuel spelling variation should be noted, as should Jacob's confession that he has seen God face to face and yet his life has been delivered. The limp at sunrise makes the blessing permanently bodily. Verse 33 closes with an etiological notice concerning the גיד הנשה, where translators should avoid overprecision beyond what the Hebrew itself warrants. The to this day formula links Jacob's wound to later Israelite practice and leaves the narrative suspended between memory, body, naming, and worshipful restraint. Versification follows the MT.
