The Book of Genesis, Chapter 16בראשית 16

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Pressure from deferred promise breaks here into human expedient, domestic fracture, divine encounter, and a secondary line of blessing that does not displace the primary promise. Sarai's barrenness, already stated earlier in Genesis, becomes the active crisis around which the narrative turns. Rather than waiting in quiet suspension, Abram and Sarai attempt to secure offspring through Hagar the Egyptian slave, and the result is not resolution but humiliation, accusation, and flight. This is therefore not merely a story about surrogate childbearing; it is a searching account of what happens when promise is pursued by a culturally intelligible but spiritually unresolved strategy. Yet the narrative does not leave Hagar at the level of collateral damage. In the wilderness she is seen, addressed, commanded, promised descendants, and given a son whose name memorializes divine hearing. Failure and mercy are thus tightly intertwined. The promised line through Sarai is not annulled, but Hagar and Ishmael are not treated as discarded narrative excess either. The scene widens the Abraham story by showing that the God of promise is also the God who hears affliction in the wilderness and speaks into the consequences of human disorder.

Translation & textual notes

The Hebrew base text here follows the Masoretic Text in the Leningrad tradition as represented by the Westminster Leningrad Codex / MorphHB diplomatic stream imported from OSHB; distinctively copyrighted apparatus from BHS or BHQ is not reproduced. A pivotal scene within the Abram-Sarai cycle unfolds here, narrating the first major attempt to resolve the promise of seed by means other than the direct divine provision emphasized in Genesis 15. Verse 1 restates Sarai's barrenness and introduces Hagar as an Egyptian slave woman, a detail that is narratively economical but significant, since Egypt has just been the setting of the preceding chapter and Hagar's ethnicity will remain part of the story's texture. Verse 2's statement, 'YHWH has restrained me from bearing,' shows Sarai interpreting her condition theologically, and the phrase אולי אבנה ממנה is a major interpretive crux: the idiom of being 'built' through another woman reflects household and lineage logic, not merely modern notions of personal motherhood. Verse 2 also pointedly states that Abram listened 'to the voice of Sarai,' a formulation whose resonance with earlier biblical scenes has often been noticed. Verse 4's shift in Hagar's perception once she conceives is narrated with striking compression, and Sarai's complaint in v.5 is rhetorically difficult and emotionally charged; the line חמסי עליך is forceful and may be heard as an accusation that Abram bears responsibility for the injustice now unfolding. Verse 6 is equally important and often difficult for interpretation, because Abram's answer yields Hagar back into Sarai's hand and the verb ענה marks Sarai's treatment as affliction or harsh oppression rather than mere firmness. The appearance of the מלאך יהוה in vv.7-11 is among the narrative's central theological issues. The messenger speaks with a divine authority that has long prompted discussion about agency, manifestation, and the relation between messenger and sender in Hebrew narrative theology. Verse 9's command that Hagar return and humble herself under Sarai's hand must be read together with the promise that follows; it is not a softening of affliction but a word spoken into it. Verse 11's naming of Ishmael explicitly interprets the birth through divine hearing, and verse 12's characterization of him as a פרא אדם is much discussed; the phrase should not be flattened into a merely pejorative label but understood in relation to untamed freedom, conflict, and life on the edge of settled social order. Verse 13 contains one of the most arresting divine names or confessional expressions in Genesis: אל ראי and the difficult follow-up clause have generated significant debate over whether the emphasis falls on God's seeing, Hagar's seeing, survival after seeing, or the mutuality of encounter. Verse 14's well-name, באר לחי ראי, likewise preserves compressed theology in place-memory. Ishmael's birth and Abram's age restore narrative concreteness at the close, ensuring that the episode is not merely visionary or symbolic but fully integrated into patriarchal chronology. Versification follows the MT.
