The Book of Exodus, Chapter 24שמות 24

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The covenant is sealed at Sinai: Moses reads the words, Israel twice vows obedience — 'we will do and we will hear' — and blood seals altar and people together. Moses, Aaron, and seventy elders ascend and behold Israel's God in a meal, after which Moses alone climbs into the glory-cloud to receive the tablets.

Translation & textual notes

Exodus 24 is textually well preserved in the MT; the Samaritan Pentateuch and LXX show only minor variants (e.g. the LXX softens some of the anthropomorphic language of the elders' vision in vv.10-11, and a few witnesses smooth the abrupt shifts of addressee between vv.1-2, 9-11, and 12-18). The chapter's most debated issue is source-critical rather than text-critical: many scholars see an interweaving of at least two originally distinct traditions — a covenant-ratification narrative built around the sacrificial blood rite and the נַעֲשֶׂה / נַעֲשֶׂה וְנִשְׁמָע pledge (vv.3-8), and a theophany/ascent narrative featuring the vision of God, the covenant meal, and Moses' entry into the glory-cloud (vv.1-2, 9-11, 12-18) — juxtaposed rather than fully harmonized, which accounts for the repeated ascent notices (vv.1, 9, 13, 15, 18) and the shifting cast of the divine encounter. Despite these compositional questions, the received Hebrew text itself is stable, and the chapter reads coherently as the covenant's sealing, its confirming meal, and the prelude to the giving of the tablets and the tabernacle instructions.

And to Moses he said, "Come up to YHWH, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and worship from afar."

Continuative (resumes YHWH's speech begun in Exod 20:22)וְ
The chapter opens mid-speech, fronting the prepositional phrase אֶל־מֹשֶׁה for emphasis: this next instruction is addressed specifically to Moses, initiating the covenant-ratification ceremony that will occupy the whole chapter.
