The Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 8דברים 8

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Manna and memory. The forty years replayed as a single pedagogy — hunger and bread, discipline as a father gives a son — and the good land catalogued almost sensually, brooks and wheat and honey and iron. Its danger is named just as plainly: full houses, a lifted heart, forgetting. 'Not by bread alone' becomes the fulcrum on which prosperity itself is judged.

Translation & textual notes

Deuteronomy 8's MT is textually stable; the Leningrad Codex preserves it with unusual smoothness for a chapter of this length, and the main critical apparatus concerns center on orthography rather than substance. The chief crux is the Ketiv-Qere at v.2, מצותו (Ketiv, unpointed, formally singular-with-suffix) read as Qere מִצְוֺתָיו ('his commandments', plural) — a routine Masoretic correction of a defective spelling, not a substantive variant, and the Samaritan Pentateuch and versions (LXX, Vulgate, Peshitta) all support the plural sense of the Qere. A second minor point is the archaic 2ms datival suffix spelled with final ־ָךְ (as in לָּךְ v.10, לְךָ v.13) which the Masoretic vocalization occasionally tags with feminine-suffix morphology by formal convention though the referent (Israel, addressed as 'you') is masculine singular throughout — a well-known feature of Deuteronomy's 'converted' or archaic second-person forms, not a genuine gender shift. Otherwise the chapter's vocabulary is unremarkable: the rare hapax מִסְכֵּנֻת ('scarcity', v.9) and the technical term הַעִדֹתִי ('I testify/warn', v.19, the standard verb for invoking covenant witnesses, cf. 4:26, 30:19, 31:28) are secure. No verse in ch. 8 shows meaningful divergence between MT, SP, and the versions; the Qumran evidence for Deuteronomy (4QDeut manuscripts) does not preserve this chapter in a form that challenges the received text. The chapter's literary structure — an inclusio bracketed by the patriarchal oath (v.1, v.18) and the paired warnings of forgetting (vv.11,14,19) — is a matter of rhetorical analysis rather than textual reconstruction.

Introduction / thesis statementasyndeton
Opens the chapter with the Deuteronomic keynote pairing שָׁמַר and עָשָׂה ('keep... to do') and a chain of purpose verbs (חיה, רבה, בוא, ירשׁ), framing obedience as the condition for entering and possessing the land promised by oath to the patriarchs.

Three wayyiqtol verbs narrate the humbling-hungering-feeding sequence, climaxing in the antithetical maxim of v. 3b — bread sustains the body, but every word from YHWH's mouth is what truly grounds human life. Jesus quotes this verse verbatim against Satan (Matt 4:4/Luke 4:4).

Covenant-warning apodosis — the consequence of apostasyוְ
A formal, legally-toned warning (הַעִדֹתִי, the technical verb for invoking covenant witnesses) spelling out the ultimate stakes of the chapter's forgetting-motif: not merely losing blessing but total destruction, framed as a doubled infinitive-absolute construction (שָׁכֹחַ תִּשְׁכַּח // אָבֹד תֹּאבֵדוּן) for maximum solemnity.

Closing warning — Israel's fate paralleled to the nationsasyndeton
Closes the chapter with the starkest possible warning: the same אבד ('perish/destroy') applied to the dispossessed Canaanite nations (מַאֲבִיד) is the fate awaiting Israel (תֹאבֵדוּן) for the same root failure — not listening to YHWH's voice — bringing the whole chapter's life-or-death stakes (cf. v.1) to their final, unadorned statement.
