The Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 34דברים 34

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The Torah's last chapter watches Moses climb Pisgah for a God-given panorama of the whole land he will never enter, then die 'by the mouth of YHWH' and lie in an unmarked grave, mourned thirty days. Joshua succeeds him, and the closing epitaph declares that no prophet since has known YHWH face to face as Moses did.

Translation & textual notes

Deuteronomy 34 is textually stable in the MT but is the most-discussed chapter in the Torah exegetically, since its final verses describe events — Moses' death and burial — that Moses himself could not have witnessed. The Talmud (b. Bava Batra 15a) records the classic debate: R. Judah and R. Nehemiah hold that Joshua wrote these last eight verses (from v.5), while a minority view has Moses himself writing them in advance, in tears, at divine dictation — a tension the chapter's own language invites, since 'to this day' (v.6) and 'has not arisen since' (v.10) read as retrospective notices from a later narratorial vantage. The Samaritan Pentateuch and LXX largely agree with the MT's wording, though the LXX renders 'by the mouth of YHWH' (עַל־פִּי יְהוָה, v.5) with a paraphrase, softening the vivid Hebrew idiom later expounded rabbinically as the 'death by the kiss.' The grammatical subject of וַיִּקְבֹּר 'and he buried him' (v.6) is left ambiguous — the nearest antecedent is YHWH himself, and Jewish tradition (Sifre, Rashi) generally takes God as Moses' own gravedigger. לֵחֹה (v.7) is a hapax legomenon whose nuance ('freshness, vigor') is inferred mainly from context. The closing formula 'like Moses, whom YHWH knew face to face' (v.10) both fulfills and complicates Deut 18:15's promise of a coming prophet 'like Moses.'

Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, the top of Pisgah, which faces Jericho, and YHWH showed him all the land — Gilead as far as Dan.

Narrative resumption — the chapter opens by continuing the wayyiqtol chain of Deut 32-33asyndeton
The chapter opens with two wayyiqtol verbs (וַיַּעַל, וַיַּרְאֵהוּ) that carry the main narrative line forward from Moses' blessing of the tribes in ch. 33 into the final ascent and vision. The list of regions moving from Gilead (northeast) to Dan (far north) begins the panorama that will sweep the whole promised land in vv. 1-3.
