The Book of Leviticus, Chapter 3ויקרא 3

Each verse opens with the running Hebrew, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case/state or parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The sacrifice of well-being, the one offering Israel shares with God at table. Herd, lamb, or goat — hands laid, blood dashed round the altar, kidneys, liver-lobe, and the sheep's fat tail burned as fire's food. A closing perpetual statute seals the division forever: fat and blood belong to YHWH alone, never eaten, in any dwelling.

Translation & textual notes

Leviticus 3 is textually stable in the MT, and the chapter's difficulties are lexical and interpretive rather than text-critical. The name of the offering, שְׁלָמִים (from the root שׁלם, 'be whole, complete, at peace'), resists a settled rendering: 'peace offering,' 'offering of well-being,' 'fellowship offering,' and 'shared offering' all capture part of it, and the Septuagint's θυσία σωτηρίου ('sacrifice of deliverance/salvation') is already an interpretation rather than a translation. The anatomical precision of the fat portions is notable: the אַלְיָה of v. 9 is the heavy fat tail of the broad-tailed sheep of the ancient Near East, a delicacy, and its inclusion means the choicest part goes to God. The יֹתֶרֶת עַל־הַכָּבֵד — the caudate lobe or appendage on the liver (vv. 4, 10, 15) — is the very organ read for omens in Mesopotamian extispicy; here it is simply burned, never inspected, which has been read as a quiet polemic against divination. The chapter closes (v. 17) with a חֻקַּת עוֹלָם binding every generation and every dwelling: no fat and no blood. The blood prohibition receives its theological grounding later, at 17:11 ('the life of the flesh is in the blood'), and becomes the enduring basis of Israelite dietary practice. Versification follows the MT.

And if his offering is a sacrifice of well-being — if he is presenting one from the herd, whether male or female — he shall present it without blemish before the LORD.

Conditional protasis opening a new torahוְאִם
The chapter opens with the casuistic formula וְאִם ('and if'), binding this instruction to the burnt- and grain-offering torot of chs. 1–2 while marking a new class of sacrifice. Two variables are left to the worshipper (herd or flock; male or female), and one requirement is fixed: תָּמִים, unblemished.

Procedural sequence (weqatal chain)וְ
Three weqatal verbs carry the ritual forward: hand-laying, slaughter, blood-manipulation. The first two are the offerer's acts; with וְזָרְקוּ the subject shifts to בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן הַכֹּהֲנִים — the moment the victim passes out of lay hands into priestly ones.

Specification of the divine portionוְ
The weqatal chain continues but the topic narrows to what actually goes up in smoke. אִשֶּׁה לַיהוָה stands in apposition to the offering, and a long series of definite direct objects (vv. 3–4) itemizes the fat with anatomical precision — nothing of the חֵלֶב is left to the offerer's discretion.

The verse ends the goat case, then lifts out of casuistry altogether: the bare nominal clause כָּל חֵלֶב לַיהוָה ('all fat is the LORD's') abstracts a principle from the three ritual recitations and forms the bridge to the perpetual statute of v. 17.
